The Michigan Attorney General’s office will be presenting assemblies to Kindergarten through 8th grade students on Nov.11, 2009. The following summary is directly from their website describing the program.
The Michigan CSI consists of customized presentations for kindergarten through eighth-grade students
and a community seminar. The program was piloted in the spring of 2007 to over 8,500 students and
since the program launch in the fall of 2007 has been presented to more than 400,000 students. The
kindergarten through third-grade presentation includes a video of the acclaimed book Faux Paw's
Adventures in the Internet. The book and seminar material are being presented in cooperation with the
Internet Keep Safe Coalition. The primary focus is to emphasize students should: keep safe by not
sharing any personal information, keep away from Internet strangers, and keep telling parents or a
trusted adult about anything that makes them feel uncomfortable.
In addition to the keep safe, keep away, and keep telling messages, students in fourth grade and above
also learn about common Internet predator grooming techniques and appropriate responses to cyber
harassment. Fourth- through eighth-grade students watch a realistic fiction video entitled "Predator"
provided compliments of the nonprofit group i-SAFE Inc.
Sixth- through eighth-grade students additionally are cautioned about revealing personal information
on social networking sites and watch an i-SAFE Inc. video about a female Internet predator victim.
The sixth-grade through eighth-grade students also watch an i-SAFE Inc. video about a male cyberbullying
victim.
The program's impact is remarkable. All handouts and more information are available on the Michigan
CSI website (www.michigan.gov/csi).

SGT Bixler joined the Army in 2001 and loves what she is doing. She is an Army recruiter or as she would say a “mentor” for the students at Peck High School and four other schools in the area. She took the time to become more acquainted with the students by doing a boot camp demonstration. SGT Bixler is no average recruiter; she wants to be more involved with the students and not try to force them to join the Army. She happily accepted the invitation to step in and provide a special program for the physical education class for a day. She feels educating the students in a classroom setting is much like recruiting because she is teaching the students about the Army. The whole student body thanks SGT Bixler for her time and knowledge.

As you have heard in the news recently, the H1N1 Virus is expected to be much more prevalent this year than last year. As with any flu, virus or cold, the greatest preventative measure is personal hygiene. Measures to help prevent contraction include:
• Frequent hand washing with soap and water.
• Cover noses and mouths with a tissue when coughing or sneezing (or a shirt sleeve or elbow if no tissue is available).
As always, we will take extra time to clean areas that students and staff come in contact with regularly

If you pick your child up from school at the back of the building please do not drive up by the doors to pick them up. This is a safety issue for our students coming out of the building. Please park in the parking area and watch for them to come out. When parents drive up to the doors the parents that are parked and waiting cannot see their children and we don’t want our children to run out in front of a car that is right by the door.

We are starting a new reward program with our students on Monday, February 2. This award is called the Pirate Treasure Ticket. Students will be given a Pirate Treasure Ticket when they are seen doing something that exhibits one of our behavior expectations (Pride, Integrity, Respect, Attitude, Theme, Enthusiasm, and Safety) by a Peck Elementary staff member. Their names will go up on a bulletin board recognizing this achievement and their name will go in for a weekly drawing for a prize, with at least 2 students from each grade getting a prize each week. We will also keep track of what behavior expectations they get tickets for and when they have received one for each of the behavior expectations they will be put on a list to participate in a games and activities afternoon as a reward for their exceptional behavior characteristics. We are excited about this new program and are looking forward to giving out many Pirate Treasure Tickets to our exceptional Peck Elementary Students.

Welcome to the 2008-2009 school year. I am Mrs. Warren and I am the new Peck Elementary Principal. I am excited to be a part of the Peck staff. We have gotten off to a great start this year and I am enjoying getting to know so many new people. Thank you to everyone for the warm welcome.
I am married with three children (William who is 6, Andrew who is 4, and Claire who is 14 months). My husband’s name is Tim and we live Croswell. I taught in the Croswell-Lexington school district for 8 years, 5 years in special education and 3 years in 3rd grade. I then spent two years in Port Huron Area School District as an Elementary Assistant Principal. After that I was the Elementary principal in Bentley Community Schools in Burton. I have now made the move to Peck Community Schools and am proud to be a Peck Pirate. I hope to spend many wonderful years helping to provide a quality education for our students.
Please feel free to stop in any time with questions, comments, or ideas. I will do my best to make time for you. Once again, I am looking forward to a great year.

On behalf of the Peck Jr/Sr High School staff I would like to welcome back our students. I hope that everyone had a great summer! We hope that this will assist students with their academics and help them to have a successful 2008-09 school year. Best wishes to all. Mr. Roles

In a Trimester system the school year is divided into thirds. A semester is 18 weeks long, a Trimester is 12 weeks long and the overall length of the school year will be the same. Also, in the new Trimester format students in the Jr/Sr High School will take only five classes a day as opposed to the seven periods a day they presently have. Class times will be longer in the five class period system and the overall length of the day will not change. All of this change is being done to benefit the students at Peck Jr/Sr High School. As we start the winter sports season we will be experiencing a huge change in the format. As you are aware the girls basketball team will be playing this winter for the first time ever. We have done major planning as to how we are going to handle this change and good plans are never perfect so please bare with us as we experience this change together. Since we are having problems with gym times and space we have to use the old gym for practices and games. Some nights we will be having two events at the same time, however understand that you will only be paying one price and you can attend both games. The cost of nights when there are two events going on is $4.00. Please parents we need your help in making sure that your children are not running around in the hallways during these events. Again please bear with us as we experience this huge change together.

Mr. Kreger, a big Michigan football fan, was startled to find his sixth grade classroom vandalized when arriving Friday morning before the Michigan vs. Michigan State game. “I was aghast to discover my classroom drowning in green,” Mr. Kreger told elementary principal Mrs. Reed. Evidence suggests the culprits may include sixth grade students from Mr. Kreger’s very own class, but somebody on staff would have had to provide access to the room. Mr. Kreger was able to stand proud, in the end, as his team won in the football game. Maze and blue took the football field with a victory, meanwhile the vandals who covered his classroom in green are surely green with envy.

In the past few weeks we have had several students diagnosed with ringworm. This can be very contagious, especially among school-age children. Symptoms include itchy, red, raised, scaly patches that may blister and ooze. The patches often have sharply-defined edges. They are often redder around the outside with normal skin tone in the center which creates the appearance of a ring. If your son or daughter experiences any of these symptoms, you may want to seek medical attention.
Ringworm can be passed from one person to the next by direct skin-to-skin contact or by contact with contaminated items such as combs, unwashed clothing, and shower or pool surfaces. You may also catch ringworm from pets or strays that carry the fungus. Most of our cases have come from contact with cats.
We are taking all precautions at school by spending additional time cleaning and disinfecting surfaces.

We have completed two weeks of MEAP Testing in our third through sixth grades. Some grades still have more testing to complete in the coming week. You may have heard or read about the security breach at an elementary school in Jackson. A reporter wrote a story in which he described the topic that the students were writing about. Because some schools hadn’t taken that particular test yet, all 5th and 6th graders will have to take part 1A of the writing test again. We are still waiting to get the details from the state as to when that will take place.
We are trying to stay positive about all of the required testing. Parental support is extremely important as we complete our testing. You can also help your students by making sure that they have a good night’s sleep and a healthy breakfast before they come to school. These have both proven to help boost student achievement.

This is a clarification on the use of family passes. The family passes purchased by a family are solely intended for the use by a family living under the same roof during a school year. It is not for extended families. Please do not put the ticket takers in a bad situation by indicating that you are included under a family pass when you don’t live in the same household as the family that purchased it. If this issue continues family passes will be eliminated.

This is a prime time for head lice to make their appearance. No school or community is immune from this pest. It is a good practice to check your child(rens) hair on a regular (even daily) basis for bites, white nits (eggs) and/or small bugs. If you feel your child is infested, please call the families of those children who may have had contact, as well as the elementary office.

Applications are available in each of the offices for free and reduced meals. If you feel you would qualify please contact the school and an application will be sent home with your child. Only one application is necessary per family but the form does need to be filled out completely. Not only do our students benefit by receiving a free/reduced meal but the state bases funding for various programs on the number of students who are free/reduced in the Peck District. If you have any questions regarding the program please contact Cindy Bader in the Superintendent’s Office (378-5200 ext. 3000).

On December 13, 2006 the Pre-k through 3rd grades performed a musical, “Santa’s Surprise.” The children had worked on the music since October. First through 3rd grade met in Mrs. Hardy’s classroom once a week for 45 minutes to practice the music. By late November the halls were filling with Christmas music. The third graders were the main characters in the play. They signed up, if they were interested, and parts were distributed. For two and a half weeks the actors gave up their lunch recesses to go over lines and practice. These students not only kept up with their studies, but spent many hours at home memorizing their lines. A special thanks to the extra hours the parents put into the children’s performance. Also, thank you to the teachers for giving up their valuable teach time, the janitors for setting and taking down the stage, the technology crew for setting up the lights and running the sound system. This all couldn’t have been such a success without all the help from everyone.

Friday, December 1st is the end of the first three weeks of the second marking period. Progress reports will be mailed out Wednesday December 6th. The parents of any student receiving a C- or lower in a class will be sent a progress report. Progress reports may also be sent home for improvements in student’s grades, student behavior, or a variety of other things. Some students tend to look at progress reports as a negative thing. Quite the opposite is true. Progress reports are sent home to inform parents of how their children are doing and if there may need to be some communication between the home and the school to help a student succeed. Often progress reports are sent home with very positive information.
