Elementary MORNING ENTRANCE
Please remember that students who walk or get dropped off at school should not be here before 7:45 a.m. When students arrive at school they are to either go down and eat breakfast if they are eating at school or they are to line up with their peers. No student is to go to their locker before the students are dismissed from the line to go down to their classrooms with the exception of 6th grade safety patrol students. This is a school wide rule designed to keep students safe and orderly. Unless students are dropped off out back and walk through the hallway to get to the lines they are not to be in the hallway prior to the start of the school day. We request that parents drop off their students and let students get themselves prepared and into class as we need our students to be independent. If you need to talk to communicate with the teacher please send in a note or set up a conference time with the teacher. Do not enter the classroom to “help” students get their stuff ready as this does not promote the independence that students need in order to be successful.
On Friday, November 4th the parents of Peck Community Schools’ students were treated to a free meal and the opportunity to participate in classroom activities like their children do during the school day. Parents learned about and experienced the new technologies our school has implemented. For example, math and science teachers Todd Prill, Amanda Osantoski, and Carrie Robinet taught parents how to use our new cutting-edge graphing calculators. After giving a short history lesson highlighting Peck alumni, social studies teacher Bob Karasiewicz and industrial arts teacher Jamie Quicksall challenged parents with a fun quiz using the new Smart Response system, which provides immediate feedback. English teacher Julia Cramer demonstrated our new document cameras and over-head projectors, along with engaging teaching tools like Prezi, PowerPoint, and Visuwords. Finally, social studies/foreign language teacher Joanna Holiday-Kinel demonstrated and offered parents the experience of blended-learning using Moodle, our online course management system, which is used in several of her classes. Those who attended were delighted with the surprisingly rich and engaging technology their children learn with at Peck Community Schools. Parents please take time to fill out the free and reduced lunch forms that were sent home with the students. If a student qualifies, they will either receive a free lunch and breakfast or a reduced fee breakfast for $.30 and reduced fee lunch for $.40. The school also benefits because it affects the At-Risk money and Title money the school can qualify for. The greater number of students who qualify for free and reduced lunch, the greater the allocation of funds we receive from other sources. If you have any questions, please contact the school.
District COUNT DAY
One of the most important days of the school year is count day. Wednesday, October 5th will be our fall count day. On this day Peck Schools will report to the State of Michigan how many students are in attendance. It will be very important that all students are here as the number of students in attendance will determine the funding the school receives from the State. Please make every effort to see that your child/children are in school on Wednesday, October 5th. Thank you.
Schools are always looking for new ways to make things better for their students. This year one of the changes in the Jr/Sr high school is Seminar Period. The old TASK hour is gone, however, students can still get extra help from their teachers during Seminar Period. All students are assigned to a teacher for attendance, then students may choose to stay in their assigned room or ask another teacher for a Seminar pass to attend another teacher’s room for extra help. In addition, with having the students assigned to a teacher for Seminar, that teacher can mentor the students and monitor their academic and career goals progress. An academic goals and career goals form was sent home with all students, for parents to sign and return to the students Seminar teacher.

Your attendance at special events, participation in fundraisers, support with school work, and many other ways that you help and support are invaluable. It does still take a village to raise a child and a successful education can only happen with the support of parents, grandparents and community members. We have had a great year and are looking forward to another great year for 2011-2012. Have a great summer!!!

There may be unforeseen staffing changes over the summer that will change that but they will have a tentative idea as to which class they will be in for 2011-2012. They will also get a supply list for the 2011-2012 school year so that school supply shopping can be done throughout the summer while things are on sale. Have a great summer!

Students with fifteen (12) or more absences, or excessive tardiness, may be referred to the Intermediate School District truancy office for further investigation.

ATTENDANCE
Regular, consistent attendance at school is important for academic progress and future success. Compulsory attendance of all students between the ages of six and sixteen shall be enforced in compliance with the laws of the State of Michigan. Attendance and tardy patterns of individual students are monitored and parents will be contacted if either is excessive. The elementary school tries to be cooperative regarding parental emergencies. Parents should realize that asking a child to be excused from school will affect achievement and should not be done unless absolutely necessary. The administration at Peck reserves the right to use discretion as needed in all situations regarding attendance.
-School begins at 8:00 a.m. Children should be in their classroom promptly at 8:00 a.m.
-Students not in their classroom at 8:00 are tardy unless they were at breakfast for a reasonable amount of time or were on a late bus.
-Students who are tardy must report to the office for a late pass.
-Students will be considered tardy when they miss up to 30 minutes of instructional time. Any student missing more than 30 minutes of instruction time will be considered absent for that part of the day. For example: any student that arrives before 8:30 will be considered tardy for the morning; and any student arriving after 8:30 will be considered absent for the morning.
-Dismissal time is 3:05 p.m. If students need to leave before this time for an appointment they need to be signed out at the office. Early dismissal is discouraged except for necessary appointments.   read more...

District COUNT DAY
One of the most important days of the school year is count day. Wednesday, September 29th will be our fall count day. On this day Peck Schools will report to the State of Michigan how many students are in attendance on that particular day. It will be very important that all students are here as the number of students in attendance will determine the funding the school receives from the State. Please make every effort to see that your child/children are in school on Wednesday, September 29th. Thank you.
The greater number of students who qualify for free and reduced lunch the greater the allocation of funds we receive from the other sources. If you have any questions, please contact the school.

Our next meeting will be Monday, October 11 at 6:00 p.m. in Mrs. Sell’s room. We are trying an evening meeting to try to fit the schedules of working parents. Please try to attend.

Thank you to our new officers:
President = Paula Vincent (formerly treasurer)
Vice President = Tammy Williamson
Secretary = Deanna Molesworth
Co-Treasurers = Tina Molesorth and Shawna Lentner

The Michigan Attorney General’s office will be presenting assemblies to Kindergarten through 8th grade students on Nov.11, 2009. The following summary is directly from their website describing the program. The Michigan CSI consists of customized presentations for kindergarten through eighth-grade students and a community seminar. The program was piloted in the spring of 2007 to over 8,500 students and since the program launch in the fall of 2007 has been presented to more than 400,000 students. The kindergarten through third-grade presentation includes a video of the acclaimed book Faux Paw's Adventures in the Internet. The book and seminar material are being presented in cooperation with the Internet Keep Safe Coalition. The primary focus is to emphasize students should: keep safe by not sharing any personal information, keep away from Internet strangers, and keep telling parents or a trusted adult about anything that makes them feel uncomfortable. In addition to the keep safe, keep away, and keep telling messages, students in fourth grade and above also learn about common Internet predator grooming techniques and appropriate responses to cyber harassment. Fourth- through eighth-grade students watch a realistic fiction video entitled "Predator" provided compliments of the nonprofit group i-SAFE Inc. Sixth- through eighth-grade students additionally are cautioned about revealing personal information on social networking sites and watch an i-SAFE Inc. video about a female Internet predator victim. The sixth-grade through eighth-grade students also watch an i-SAFE Inc. video about a male cyberbullying victim. The program's impact is remarkable. ALL COATS, JACKETS AND BOOK BAGS ARE TO BE PLACED IN LOCKERS AND ARE NOT TO BE WORN IN OR TAKEN TO CLASS.

Our first PPTO meeting of the year was October 12, 2009. We had a few new faces at this meeting so we are excited about that. We would still like to see more parents get involved with our PPTO. Congratulations to Mike Jones (President), Sandi Sherlock (Vice President) and Paula Vincent (Treasurer). We also give a continued thank you to Mrs. Zwolinski who was our secretary last year and continues on in that capacity.

Jr./Sr. High School SGT Bixler’s Boot Camp
SGT Bixler joined the Army in 2001 and loves what she is doing. She is an Army recruiter or as she would say a “mentor” for the students at Peck High School and four other schools in the area. She took the time to become more acquainted with the students by doing a boot camp demonstration. SGT Bixler is no average recruiter; she wants to be more involved with the students and not try to force them to join the Army. She happily accepted the invitation to step in and provide a special program for the physical education class for a day. She feels educating the students in a classroom setting is much like recruiting because she is teaching the students about the Army. The whole student body thanks SGT Bixler for her time and knowledge.
District H1N1 Virus
As you have heard in the news recently, the H1N1 Virus is expected to be much more prevalent this year than last year. As with any flu, virus or cold, the greatest preventative measure is personal hygiene. Measures to help prevent contraction include: • Frequent hand washing with soap and water. • Cover noses and mouths with a tissue when coughing or sneezing (or a shirt sleeve or elbow if no tissue is available). As always, we will take extra time to clean areas that students and staff come in contact with regularly
